Grey was formed in Mantova (Italy) in 2001 when Luca, Paolo, Diego and Andrea, a group of friends with different musical experience – all of them shared a strong passion for rock music and all have been influenced by the likes of Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd – decided to make one of their common artistic beliefs.
The first jam sessions proved substantial, they seemed to be on the right track and made up their mind to record some pieces in the home studio of a friend of theirs. Their 2002 self-produced demo Elephants fall – infused with a slow, melancholic electro-acoustic sound with an added hint of psychedelia – was greeted with enthusiastic reviews by the specialized press as well as by Italian and foreign radios and the band began playing their first gigs in some Italian music clubs. Several web sites gave space to good reviews about it thus sparking off the interest of many insiders such as Federico Sparano (ARTES Records).
In 2003 they recorded their full-length debut Sulphur with Giulio Casale as producer. The release of the album on ARTES Records (Mescal - Sony Music distribution) is scheduled for March 2004. Sulphur works out the ideas which already defined Elephants fall with an accent on the most intense solutions and brand new sounds as well: broadened moments (Love hours passing and Between us) mingle with a somehow rougher and more nervous sound (Drink caffeine still floating and Traffic bulge), or with the easy and melancholic tunes of their first single, My sweet hell.
